Rapid Re-Housing

Rapid Re-housing is a crisis intervention designed to quickly move individuals and families experiencing homelessness into permanent housing. The goal of the JFS Rapid Re-housing program is to limit the amount of time people are homeless and ensure that they stay in their homes after placement.

The three core components of the JFS Rapid Re-Housing program are:

  • Housing identification
  • Financial and supportive services
  • Ongoing personal support and success planning

Our program uses the Housing First model, an approach that is guided by the belief that people need basic necessities like food and shelter before they are able to focus on anything less critical, such as employment, managing finances, or attending to social and emotional issues. It is also based on the theory that client choice is valuable in housing selection and supportive service participation—making future success more likely.

Studies show that the Housing First model works, even for people with complex health and behavioral needs and for those who have had very little success in more traditional housing programs. Housing First leads to better housing retention rates and better health outcomes.

The JFS Rapid Re-Housing stabilization team works closely with individuals and families in need of housing by helping them identify and choose suitable housing that they can access quickly. We work in coordination with a large network of partners, including funders, landlords, and community and faith-based organizations. The Rapid Re-housing program is part of a national initiative and we work with many community partners to ensure the long-term stability and well-being of residents.

We place program participants in secure 12-month leases, provide them with ongoing financial support as needed, and ensure their housing stability throughout the lease period. Our unique stabilization team provides ongoing support to help them stay housed for at least one year. Rapid Re-Housing is successful with 94% of residents who receive this type of support remain housed for at least 12 months after their exit from assistance.

The program is funded by multi-million-dollar grants that ensure rent support to participants and rent payment to participating landlords.
